SUPERMARKETS TEST LOYALTY SYSTEM

Card Wire

January 6, 2004

ATM and POS hardware maker NCR Corp. has scored a hat trick this fall, expanding the adoption of its Copient system that uses supermarket reward cards to build consumer sales. Copient combines touch-screen kiosks with software to read the cards and offer personalized discount coupons and other rewards to the cardholder. In November, Giant Eagle, Inc. began testing the system at six stores in Pittsburgh and Erie, PA. Kiosks are located at the store entrance and checkout lanes in a program that Giant Eagle is marketing as the Personal Shopping System. Pittsburgh-based Giant Eagle has 215 stores in Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia and Maryland. In October, Speedway SuperAmerica began a pilot of the Copient system at 100 of its 1,700 convenience stores. Indianapolis-based Marsh Supermarkets enlarged its use of Copient to 700 kiosks in 67 stores, according to an NCR spokesperson. Marsh is marketing the program as MyMarsh. Marsh operates 93 supermarkets and 179 convenience stores in Indiana and western Ohio.
