It seems strange to think that only 11 years ago, people were wondering Who Killed the Electric Car? This is the name of the 2006 documentary that explores the issues surrounding the demise of battery-powered vehicles.

But, now, everyone knows that electric vehicles are not only alive and well, but growing in popularity. And it can definitely be argued that Nissan, more than most companies, understands the electric vehicle (EV) revolution. After all, the all-electric Nissan Leaf is the world's best-selling EV.

Actress Margo Robbie is Standing Up for the Electric Vehicle

Having starred in The Wolf of Wall Street and Suicide Squad, Margot Robbie is currently one of the most popular actors in Hollywood. So, it makes sense that Nissan has chosen her to serve as the new face of its electric vehicle and zero emission program.

Nissan has produced a mini-movie showing off their BladeGlider prototype, with Robbie at the wheel. In this film, Robbie puts this all-electric sports car through its paces around the world-famous Monaco Grand Prix circuit. By racing another BladeGlider, Robbie shows off the fact that the souped-up EV can hit 100 mph in less than five seconds. She also displays the car's ability to drift around the iconic Fairmont Hairpin.

The whole point of the promotion is to show how an electric vehicle can be just as fun to drive as any gas-powered sports car. Also, the BladeGlider is meant to serve as a precursor to a whole host of future technologies that may be used in other models.

Of course, Monte Carlo was the perfect location for the BladeGlider mini-movie. Not only does the city boast a rich street racing heritage, but Monaco has also made a serious commitment to promoting sustainable energy. In fact, the country has pledged to decrease carbon emissions by 50 percent by 2030.

Joining the Electric Vehicle Revolution with a Nissan Leaf Purchase

The BladeGlider may not be for sale to the public, nor what you might call affordable even if it were. However, the Nissan Leaf is a good option to consider if a compact car will suit your driving needs. The 2017 Leaf offers a spacious interior for its size and, according to most reviewers, a comfortable ride. It also comes with a fairly decent range, being able to go up to 107 miles on a single charge.

Starting at over $30,000, though, the 2017 Leaf may be a bit pricey for buyers on a budget or for those with damaged credit. If this is the case, a 2014 Nissan Leaf can be purchased for less than $20,000 (depending on the trim). But there is a drawback to buying an older model when it comes to range. Unfortunately, the 2014 Leaf can only go up to 84 miles on a charge. Also, it takes up to 21 hours for the battery to fully charge.

With this in mind, a recent-model used Leaf would only be a good choice for someone who does a limited amount of driving. For example, urban drivers who alternate between driving and public transportation would do well with this car.

If you want to check out the BladeGlider for yourself, an opportunity is available. This impressive electric vehicle will be on display at the 87th Geneva International Motor Show from March 7 to 19, 2017.
