Not everyone is a perfect driver and sometimes accidents can happen on the road. Road safety experts have identified several of the most common types of car accidents.

Most Common Auto Accident Types

drowsy driving, asleep at wheelAccording to the National Motor Vehicle Crash Causation Survey, these are the top five causes of car crashes in the US:

  • Falling asleep at the wheel: 7 percent of all crashes, 21 percent of fatal crashes
  • Loss of control: 11 percent of all crashes
  • Blind left turns: 12 percent of all crashes
  • Rear ends: 23 to 30 percent of all crashes
  • Not staying in your lane: Approximately 30 percent of all crashes

Among the next most common types, rolling right on a red light was the next highest, making up six percent of all pedestrian deaths. The National Motor Vehicle Crash Causation Survey also highlights that around 36 percent of pre-crash events happen at intersection turns.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and US Department of Transportation, over six million car crashes occur every single year. Additionally, more than 40,000 annual fatalities are connected to these crashes.

These numbers are too high, and every driver needs to keep safety on their mind when they're behind the wheel. Wear your seat belt, keep your focus on the road, follow the speed limit and rules of the road, practice defensive driving, and never drive while drowsy or under the influence. Remember to always be alert and be mindful of other drivers and pedestrians, too.
